The caretaker government should not issue directives by executive order

Nepali Congress has said that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's government is trying to curb freedom of expression in the name of social media management. It has made a special appeal to the younger generation to be aware of the recent objectionable and undemocratic steps. The Nepali Congress has issued a statement warning the government not to proceed with the process of the proposed directive.

Finally, the Nepali Congress expresses its serious objection to the government reviving the controversial Information Technology Bill under consideration in Parliament in the name of 'Social Network Management Directive', despite widespread protests.

No one can be bothered about the question of regulating social media, making it dignified and healthy, but for that, there are necessary provisions within the existing law. The need to issue a directive at the time of the dissolution of Parliament without further consultation, even if additional arrangements are needed, raises serious questions about the government's intentions. The caretaker government should not issue directives from any executive order affecting civil rights.
Warning the government not to proceed with the process of the proposed directive, the Nepali Congress will further highlight this issue in today's nationwide demonstration. Preparations for the government to impose its views on social media are another step towards authoritarianism. Urging all the proponents of freedom of expression to be aware of this in time, the Nepali Congress also calls on the younger generation of network users for special awareness.
